Tencent Reportedly Launching A Global Version Of WeGame Platform

Tencent has been reported to launch the international version of WeGame sometime in the future. This report comes after a spokesman for Tencent on Friday explained that the “platform” will hopefully “bring more Chinese games to the global market.”

WeGame is said to be China’s biggest PC games distribution platform, currently offering folks a rough estimate around 220 games to download, including titles developed overseas.

With that said, the report on Tencent wanting to bring WeGame to Hong Kong so that the company can build up an overseas market comes in from publication site South China Morning Post. Additionally, the website wrote up the following information:

“Tencent Holdings, which runs the world’s largest video games business by revenue, is set to launch the international version of its WeGame store and social platform in Hong Kong, with the aim to build up the overseas market for China-developed personal computer games.”

The above comes in after a spokesman for the Shenzhen-based company stated the following information:

“The Hong Kong version of WeGame is now under development. This version will be available for overseas users, and we will use this platform to bring more Chinese games to the global market.”

The report noted that Tencent’s recent move to expand WeGame’s international usage follows an announcement made by Valve last month, where the company seeks to bring Steam to China under an exclusive partnership with Perfect World.

As it stands now, Tencent owns big stakes in developers like Riot Games, Epic Games, Glu Mobile, Activision Blizzard, CJ Games, and Aiming according to the report.

Finally, the publication site believes that by launching a Hong Kong-based WeGame version, Tencent could get around mainland’s strict censorship rules while catering to an international audience by bringing some of the Western games over to the platform. With that said, what are your thoughts on Tencent wanting to bring WeGame to the global market?
