Monkey King: Hero Is Back Sees Chinese And Japanese Devs Teaming Up For PS4 Brawler

During the ChinaJoy 2018 event Oasis Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment jointly announced Monkey King: Hero Is Back for the PlayStation 4. The mystical, mythical, monkey-led 3D brawler game sees players diving intothe role of the Monkey King as he ventures across ancient China in a story that loosely follows the events of the Chinese animated film.

The events of the game are based on the Monkey King movie that came out way back in 2015, and went on to become one of the highest grossing animated flicks in China. Players will take on the role of three different characters, including the Monkey King, Pigsy and the boy Liu Jiang.

HexaDrive will be handling the majority of the development with SIE overseeing and helping with some of the production on the game as well. And it’s the Japanese branch of Sony, not the Western or European branch. So unlike the West, Chinese game developers aren’t concerned with trying to tick every box on the Diversity™ chart.

The game is a 3D brawler, where you unleash combos, kick, punch, use weapons, and the environment to defeat enemies.

The game reminds me of one of those classic 3D adventure games that were popular back during the PS2 era, such as Kao The Kangaroo and Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams.

It also has that classic movie-game feel to it, but hopefully it’s of a much higher quality than a lot of the cash-in trash that was released during the sixth and seventh generation of gaming for the OG Xbox, PS2, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Monkey King: Hero Is Back is planning on containing 10 hours worth of gameplay in the main storyline, and will be featured throughout this year’s ChinaJoy convention up through August 6th, featuring 15 minutes worth of gameplay demonstrations.

You can look for Monkey King: Hero Is Back to launch exclusively for the PlayStation 4 in 2019.
