Nintendo Dominated July Software Sales, But Ties With PS4, Xbox In August Hardware Revenue

The top selling video games of July were dominated by Nintendo and Ubisoft. Out of the ten best selling games of July, 2018 five of those games were Nintendo Switch exclusives, while three titles were from Ubisoft, one from Activision, and one from Take-Two Interactive.

Blues noted that over on the NPD website the firm rolled out the top 10 best selling retail and digital games for July, 2018 and as you can see, it was completion Nintendomination.

Nintendo still retained three out of the top ten spots for August, 2018’s NPD chart, and managed five out of the 20 top selling pieces of software during the month. Madden NFL 19 was the best-selling game during August, followed by Monster Hunter: World and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege.

As noted by VentureBeat, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft nearly tied in hardware revenue throughout August, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One. According to Venturebeat, the article notes that based on the NPD monthly spend estimates the consoles practically tied…

“[…] the month was effectively a tie in terms of dollars sales between the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. So while August was a month when Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft could hold hands, 2018 is looking like a year for them to all go to the bank together.”

However, it’s difficult to tell how this breaks down in terms of SKU movement, given that the base Nintendo Switch is more expensive than the vanilla 500GB PS4, which means that if they tied in revenue then the PS4 sold more units. However, Sony oftentimes includes the PS4 Pro with the dollar spend and overall SKU shipments of all PS4 units, including the 500GB, the Slim, the 1TB and the Pro. So if that were the case, then it could mean that the Switch may have sold more if the revenue from the PS4 Pro is included in the overall valuation of monthly consumer spending, since it costs $399 where-as the Switch is $299.

And not to leave Microsoft out of the equation, but since the company includes the Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X, it’s no surprise that revenue spending might equate to what Sony and Nintendo are taking in given that the Xbox One X alone costs $499. So no matter how you cut the custard, unless the Xbox One X barely moved any units, it’s very likely that the Xbox One in total sold less than the Switch and PS4 SKUs.
