What happens when you capitalize on normies and centrist™ with a popular free-to-play game that has paid skins/content? Well, you get truckloads of money to laugh all the way to the bank according to a new report. Call of Duty: Mobile has broken a record during launch week, and has more downloads than Fortnite and PUBG’s launch week combined.
Like any other mobile game attempting to push a free experience and content locked behind paywalls with the excuse of unlockable content via XP comes the best recipe to win over any normie.
Website reuters.com and sensortower.com reveal that the Tencent-developed Call of Duty: Mobile game has surpassed 100 million downloads in its first week, dwarfing the debuts of previous headliners such as Fortnite and PUBG.
In addition to passing up big battle royale titles and free-to-play games alike, Call of Duty: Mobile has more downloads than PUBG, Fortnite, and Apex Legends with each game racking up 26.3 million, 22.5 million and 25 million respectively in their first week of release.
As per website GameRant, the publication outlet reports Head of Mobile Insights at Sensor Tower, Randy Nelson, saying the following:
“[Call of Duty: Mobile is] by far the largest mobile game launch in history in terms of the player base that’s been built in the first week.”
Although Call of Duty: Mobile does not support the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2, iPad 3, and iPod Touch, many people are using recent handsets and other mobile devices to download the new first-person shooter.
Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that downloading a game is different from retaining players. I’m not sure if all 100 million will stay for months to come or if they’ll bleed off as fast as they download the FPS? Time will tell.
Lastly, with the game sporting its well-known name and optional microtransactions like “COD Points – Large Pack” for $9.99, “COD Points – Prestige Pack” for $99.99, or limited timed MTX such as “Limited Time Offer Pack” for $5.99, it should come in as a no-brainer why this game is making mad revenue and topping record-breaking downloads.
