Sony Believes The Majority Of PS4 Games Can Be Played On PS5; No Word On PS1-PS3 Backwards Compatibility

The official PlayStation blog post that offered a look into the PS5’s specs has been updated. The new update attempts to clarify how the “overwhelming majority” of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5. However, the blog post offers no word on PS3, PS2, and PS1 backwards compatibility.

As of today, SIE senior vice president of platform planning and management, Hideaki Nishino, took to the “Deep Dive” piece on the PS5 to offer a bit of clarity when it comes to playing PS4 games on the next-gen console.

UPDATE: A quick update on backward compatibility – With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.

We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead. Stay tuned!”

In other words, the update claims that there will be more than 100+ PS4 games that will be playable on the PS5 when it comes to backwards compatibility.

Right now, Sony is expecting backwards compatible titles to run at a “boosted frequency” on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions.

In addition to the above, Sony is currently testing several games on a title-by-title basis in an attempt to catch any problems that need adjustment from the OG software developers.

Lastly, in Mark Cerny’s presentation, he provided a screenshot of the “Top 100 most-played PS4 titles,” demonstrating how well Sony’s backwards compatibility efforts are going. Nevertheless, Nishino claims that Sony devs have tested “hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more” leading up to the PS5’s launch.

With all of that said, Nishino notes that Sony will provide updates on backwards compatibility and the PS5 in the coming months.
