PS5 Still Targeting Late 2020 Release Despite Coronavirus Concerns

It looks like the coronavirus won’t impact the launch of Sony’s next-gen console, according to a new report. In other words, the PS5 is still slated to launch later this year during the holiday quarter. Additionally, Sony has noted that first-party titles like The Last of Us: Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima should release as promised.

Website gamesindustry.biz cites a Sony spokesperson saying that the company doesn’t expect the “novel coronavirus” to have a “notable impact on the PlayStation 5 launch later this year.”

If the above information holds any weight as per this Sony spokesperson, then expect the next-gen console to release as it was first announced, which is sometime in Q4 this year.

Moreover, the website highlights a new PDF file that Sony released on sony.net, which offers some insight into what gamers and fans can expect from the blue brand moving forward:

Game and Network Services Segment:

  • Sony estimates that there will be no material impact on this business for the current fiscal year.
  • Although no issues have emerged so far, Sony is carefully monitoring the risk of delays in production schedules for game software titles at both its first-party studios and partner studios, primarily in Europe and the U.S.

The PDF also touches on the coronavirus not having a material impact on Sony’s gaming business for the current fiscal year, which will end on March 31st, 2020. However, we’ll find out when the company provides said numbers and statistics in its report.

So, what does this all mean? Well, it means that first-party titles heading to the PS4 like The Last of Us: Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima should still release on May 29th and June 26th, 2020. Moreover, the PS5 is still on for a late 2020 release.
