The U.S. NPD Group has released its chart for June regarding video games and sales (although there’s more to the “sales” story). With that said, Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part 2 may have topped said chart, but it did not break Marvel’s Spider-Man September 2018 launch month record when it comes to a Sony-published game.
Firstly, and this is important to note, The following chart is sorted by DOLLAR SALES and not NUMBER OF UNITS SOLD. Also, the U.S. NPD Group only tracks physical sales at retailers, where at times the firm receives digital data from publishers/developers, but this isn’t always the case with other companies.
For instance, Nintendo and Activision Blizzard do not provide digital numbers for all their stuff (this includes first-party digital sales and Battle.net). Additionally, microtransactions, subscriptions, or things not related to actual game sales are not counted.
Anyway, the new list via npd.com sits below:
Last Week | This Week | Games |
---|---|---|
New | 1 | The Last of Us: Part 2 |
1 | 2 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare |
3 | 3 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons* |
2 | 4 | Grand Theft Auto V |
5 | 5 | Mortal Kombat 11 |
6 | 6 | Red Dead Redemption II |
835 | 7 | Ring Fit Adventure |
4 | 8 | NBA 2K20 |
11 | 9 | Mario Kart 8: Deluxe* |
14 | 10 | Minecraft Dungeons* |
As always, the first number represents last week’s placement. The second number serves as this week’s placement, while “New” stands for a new entry on the above list. Although it’s not here, “Re-entry” means a title that has returned on the top ten list, and the asterisk (*) means digital sales on the Nintendo eShop are not included.
Furthermore, social justice advocate Mat Piscatella notes for the U.S. NPD Group that The Last of Us: Part 2 “achieved the highest launch month dollar sales of any 2020 release to date.” However, the same game did not beat out Marvel’s Spider-Man debut month record — which means The Last of Us: Part 2 holds second place for the highest launch month dollar sales for a Sony published game in history:
US NPD SW – The Last of Us: Part II achieved the highest launch month dollar sales of any 2020 release to date. The Last of Us: Part II reached the 2nd highest launch month dollar sales for a Sony published game in history. Only Marvel’s Spider-Man achieved a larger debut month.
