If you ever wanted to create your own Postal clone, there’s a now a possibility to do so given that Running With Scissors have released the game’s source code to the public. And you can download the source code… right now.
In a press release issued recently, Running With Scissors head honcho Vince Desi announced that the code is up and out there for anyone to tinker with, stating…
“People have been asking, and we have been promising this for years now, but today we are proud to announce that the source code for POSTAL is officially released to the public on Bitbucket, under the GPL2 license. Everyone now has ‘under the hood’ access, to see what makes POSTAL tick, and anyone with the time and skills can now tweak/change/update/modify anything in the game at all!”
Now that takes some real cajones… giving up your baby’s innards like that; knowing people are going to be pulling them, stretching them, and fingering around in the inner mush of the digital organs. Not everyone wants to see others make coding love to their work… especially something that’s been so close, so near and so dear for almost 20 years.
Regardless of the original Postal being a vehicle for controversy and helping make waves and break moral standards the world around back in 1997, Running With Scissors is willing to let go of their sweetheart and see what the development community at large can come up with.
And given the freedom of use with the license, it’s possible to port a project to another platform if you so wish. In the press release Vince gives a nod to a possible Dreamcast port… which is now completely tenable now that the source code is out there for the public’s poring perusal.
Running With Scissors is one of the last of the great 1990s companies who dared to defy the standards. Maybe with the source code being made open, they’ll inspire some other young bucks to pick up the mantle and carry on the legacy of making highly offensive games that whips weeping into the eyes of prudes and triggering into the hearts of SJWs.
