After starting up the Nitro Games service back in the later summer of 2018, Discord has announced that they’re bringing the service to a close starting October 15th, 2019.
Niche Gamer picked up the news from a blog post that was made over on the Discord blog on September 12th, 2019, where they explained…
“We learned a lot from all of you over the last year. Through your valuable feedback, it became clear that while we and some of you love these games, the truth is the vast majority of Nitro subscribers didn’t play them.
“So, after careful consideration, we won’t be hitting Continue when these contracts come up for renewal. The Nitro Games catalogue will be removed on October 15th, 2019.”
It’s pretty obvious why most people didn’t play the games; they were either old titles people already bought or indie games no one really cared about enough to play on Discord exclusively.
For those of you unfamiliar with the library of titles, the games that were included in the Nitro Games subscription included:
- Saints Row: The Third – The Full Package
- Saints Row IV – Game of the Century Edition
- Metro: Last Light Redux
- Lost Horizon
- Darksiders: Warmastered Edition
- Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition
- Kathy Rain
- Gonner
- Kingdom: New Lands
- System Shock: Enhanced Edition
- Super Meat Boy
- Bridge Constructor
They also had games available on the Discord app store, which you can check out below, as listed by Venture Beat:
- Dead Cells
- Frostpunk
- Omensight
- Into the Breach
- SpellForce 3
- The Banner Saga 3
- Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
- Hollow Knight
- Moonlighter
- This is the Police 2
- Starbound
For those of you interested in getting refunds due to the cessation of offering games in the Nitro Games subscription, Discord is honoring those refunds.
In place of the games they have plans on adding additional features to the subscription service, including a server boost, and the ability to go live and stream your gameplay directly to friends.
Upload sizes will also be increased to 100mb for Nitro subscribers.
What’s not made readily clear, however, is if the Nitro Games subscription contracts coming to an end also means an end of the contracts for hosting games in Discord’s digital store space?
The blog doesn’t go into any detail about the store, but it does make it known that you’ll be able to access these games up until October 15th, 2019. They also state that it won’t affect any of your Discord store purchases or perks.
