An interesting new game where players craft a narrative and choices for three burly men going on an adventure out at sea, appropriately named Burly Men At Sea, is coming soon for PC and mobile devices.
Developers Brain&Brain recently announced that the game is coming soon and did so by releasing a new trailer for the game, featuring some of the minimalistic art-style and narrative-driven gameplay.
The press release describes Burly Men At Sea as an interesting folktale…
“Set in early 20th-century Scandinavia, Burly Men at Sea is a folktale about a trio of large, bearded fishermen who step away from the ordinary to seek adventure. The game’s story branches through discovery in a series of encounters with creatures from folklore. You play as storyteller and wayfinder, shaping the narrative around the characters through interaction with their environment.”
According to the entry on Indie Fund, the game takes most of its ambition from granting players with the ability to branch the storyline based on their choices as opposed to moving along a linear path set out by the game itself.
The husband and wife development team duo worked on the game by living and working on farms across the good ‘ole U.S., of A. I’m sure that would make for an interesting documentary.
I do kind of wish we could have seen more of the actual gameplay. From the looks of it the game will keep the HUD and UI to a minimum so that players are engaged more on what’s happening on-screen, but I’m curious how the branching narratives work and what the endings will be like based on the player choices.
I’m sure we’ll learn more as the game makes its way closer to launch for mobile devices and PC. Pre-orders are available but you can learn more about Burly Men at Sea by visiting the official website.
