Ahead of E3’s official start, Volition Software revealed their new open-world action game, Agents of Mayhem. The game is a little bit like Battleborn, Overwatch and Crackdown got together, had a threesome and then had a baby.
The debut trailer for the game appeared on IGN’s YouTube channel, giving gamers a four minute cinematic look at the cartoon-style action game. You can check out the trailer below.
There’s only one part of that trailer that I thought was inventive… the stunt double. It reminded me of The Miz and Mizdow.
The three main characters appear to be the typical annoying sort; a big guy, a cocky guy and a brash girl. One would have expected to see them lined up next to the Borderlands characters.
It still impresses me that nearly a decade ago Realtime Worlds managed to work in some cool and diverse character archetypes into the original Crackdown, with a really awesome upgrade system that drastically altered their looks. It’s a bit of a shame that a decade later and we still don’t have characters in today’s industry that match up to them.
Anyway, the game sees players controlling agents under M.A.Y.H.E.M., while they battle against the forces of L.E.G.I.O.N.
The debut trailer appears to hint at players needing to use a lot of teamwork by switching between the three playable characters.
Agents of Mayhem is only a single-player title, though.
Right now I’m going to reserve excitement and judgment until seeing more. So far a lot of the new IP this generation has been retreads of everything we’ve already played last gen, just with 1080p resolution (sometimes) and 60fps (occasionally).
Volition’s new title is due for release in 2017, expect it to arrive on the usual suspects, including PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Deep Silver is publishing the title. I sure hope they reveal something juicier at E3 because the only really cool thing the game has going for it right now is that the art-style looks like a more comic-book oriented version of Overwatch.
