Valve Is Not Attending Gamescom 2018, But Valve GmbH Will Attend

As a clarification, the Valve that everybody says can’t count to “3” will not attend Gamescom 2018. Instead, Valve GmbH the company that shows up at the August event every year will, which is a branch for networking and not for showing off any technology or games.

I bet you’ve likely seen places saying that “Valve will attend Gamescom 2018,” right? Well, that’s not entirely true. Valve GmbH will instead be there.

The GmbH differentiator means a lot in this case, insofar that it’s an abbreviation of the German words “Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung,” which means “company with limited liability.” It’s a suffix used after a private limited company’s name in Germany — much like other businesses in other countries using Ltd., SP. Z.O.O., or Inc.

This is why when you go to Gamescom’s exhibitor list you’ll see that no matter what you type in “Valve” will not appear. Instead, “Valve GmbH” will appear:

Valve miss info

The subsidiary of Valve, Valve GmbH, will be stationed at Hall 3.2 (Stand: B049) which is a private business hall.

In addition to the above, Valve GmbH contact email is not Doug Lombardi, Erik Johnson or Gabe Newell (Gaben). The company’s contact email is Jan Peter (or Jan-Peter Ewert) — the person in charge of the German branch of Valve. This division is specifically there for tax, legal security, and financial reasons.

Lastly, there’s no telling if Valve, not Valve GmbH, will post a listing on Gamescom 2018 exhibitors list later this month or early in August, but I’m sure the company would have done that early on to claim a spot on the much-crowded show floor.
