It looks like Sega and Sonic Team are gearing up to release yet another meme, I mean… mainline Sonic title given the announcement Sonic Team head, Takashi Iizuka, made at this year’s SXSW Gaming event. In other words, gamers might get yet another installment on the line of other major Sonic titles or something close to Sonic Mania.
According to website Gematsu, it is reported that Sonic Team is working on a brand new blue hedgehog title. As explained above, The Japanese video game director, producer, designer, and screenwriter, Iizuka, broke the news that a forthcoming Sonic installment is currently in development.
It’s unclear if the Sonic game teased at SXSW Gaming 2019 will be based on the upcoming movie, which the live-action animated film is slated to drop late this year (November 8th, 2019).
If this new game that’s currently in development is based on the film directed by Jeff Fowler, which stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, alongside James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, then get your memes ready.
If the new game isn’t based on the film and Sega and Sonic Team aim to bring something new to the table, there’s no denying that Sega looks at Sonic Forces as something to be proud of (hence the header image). It’s a fact that Sega is pleased with Sonic Forces sales due to a 2018 report that publication site GameReactor published:
“Even though yesterday’s quarterly report from Sega was expected to show some poor performance for Sonic Forces due to the critical reception of the game (including us, as you can tell in our review), the game seems to have actually performed rather well, the same as other physical releases of the company, making the game division profitable again.
According to the report Sonic Forces, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Football Manager 2018 all had powerful performances in the market, to such an extent in fact that the company sold more than 14.3 million copies in retail, translating to a 76% increase in the quarter year-on-year, even though they released fewer games. This is mainly in the West (as sales in Japan dropped 39%), with perhaps an additional push by Total War: Warhammer II.”
With all of the above laid out, do you think Sega and Sonic Team will make a new Sonic game based on the movie that is based on the games? Do you think Sonic Force’s success will influence yet another furry meme-like Sonic entry, or do you think something decent will come out of the title that’s currently in development?
