Back on January 20th, 2020, Sega announced that every month on the 20th, fans could expect Sonic news. Well, it looks like February has an early gift for folks in that SXSW 2020 will bring a special announcement or two when the event kicks off this March.
Seeing that SXSW starts on March 13th and ends on March 22nd, 2020, it’s safe to assume Sega will use the 20th to reveal whatever this “special information” is at the Sonic The Hedgehog SXSW 2020 panel.
The aforesaid comes in courtesy of schedule.sxsw.com, which teases Sega potentially showing off “one or two” special announcements. You can read over the blurb right here:
“Sonic the Hedgehog is back at SXSW! Join special guests from SEGA and Sonic Team as they talk about the latest for the blue blur and his next steps for 2020 and beyond. There’s almost always a special announcement or two to be had, so be sure to stay tuned!”
Seeing that Sonic the Hedgehog movie is due out on February 14th, 2020, the two March announcements clearly aren’t related to the movie. Unless the panel wants to troll people by showing/talking about a month old film, but I doubt that.
Furthermore, some people speculate that Christian Whitehead will team up with Headcannon, PagodaWest Games, and Sega again to make Sonic Mania 2. However, instead of listing the game as being developed by “Christian Whitehead,” it will be known as an “Evening Star” game — since that is his latest studio.
While we wait to find out if Christian Whitehead or Evening Star will develop Sonic Mania 2, assuming a sequel is even in the works, the one or two special announcements might be related to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka’s 2021 Sonic game.
With all of that said, we’ll find out soon what these two announcements are when the event debuts on March 13th and ends on March 22nd.
