10 Underrated Indie Games for the PlayStation

Discover the top 10 underrated indie games available on PlayStation platforms.

The PlayStation 1 was released all the way back in 1995. Since then, countless underrated indie games have been released on PlayStation. Even now, with the PlayStation 5 era underway, new indie games continue to drop every month. No matter which PlayStation generation you own, you can see a ranked list of the top 10 underrated indie games for PlayStation below.

Where to Buy PlayStation Indie Games

If you want to buy PlayStation indie games, the best option is the PlayStation Store.

There are three ways to access the PlayStation Store:

  • Your PlayStation
  • PlayStation App (available on iOS and Android)
  • PlayStation Website

When you open the PlayStation Store, you’ll then need to select the ‘PlayStation Indies’ section. Here, you’ll find the best PlayStation indies from years gone by, with literally hundreds to choose from. Once you’ve found the PlayStation indie game you’re looking for, you’ll then need to buy it.

Normally, people will purchase an indie game using a credit card, debit card, PayPal, or a PSN Gift Card from OffGamers. If you use a PSN gift card, you can sometimes save money. Plus, it means you don’t have to enter your bank details in the PlayStation Store, which is great if you want to keep your bank details private.

Now, let’s look at the ten most underrated games for the PlayStation.

  • Stray

Released in 2022, Stray is a very underrated indie game. Initially, Stray gained attention on Twitter because of its amazing visuals and atmospheric gameplay, centered around a cat (who you control) trying to escape a walled city.

Since then, Stray has maintained a solid player base. However, it should be much higher when you take into account how good the game is!

  • Rocket League

Rocket League is a cult classic indie sports game.

When you play Rocket League, you get to experience arcade-style soccer action — but there’s a catch. Instead of playing with human avatars, you play in cars instead. It’s a lot of fun, so you should try it.

  • Stardew Valley

In Stardew Valley, you get to embrace your inner farmer. At the start of the game, you inherit a farm from your deceased grandfather. From there, you must take full control of the farm; raising the animals, tending to crops, and doing pretty much everything else in-between.

  • Hollow Night

Head to a mystical underground kingdom in Hollow Night, which was one of the most underrated indie games released in 2017. Interestingly, the gameplay is 2D, a nice change from the non-stop 3D action you experience in most of today’s other games.

  • Tunic

Tunic drops you in the middle of a vast and mysterious world where the lands seem to stretch forever. Here, you take control of an adorable little fox and go on the adventure of a lifetime. Strap tight, because it’s a lot of fun.

  • Katana Zero

Brought to you by indie developer Justin Stander, Katana Zero gives you full control of Subject Zero, a deadly assassin. Your job is to then complete all of the assassination contracts given to you — no questions asked!

  • Hotline Miami

Set in 1989 Miami, Hotline Miami is a fun, action-packed shooter game. If you want to experience those retro 80s vibes with some excellent gunplay, this is the game for you.

  • Firewatch

Set in the Wyoming wilderness, Firewatch is an indie game that takes you on a touching (and highly emotional) journey. Make no doubt that the story will have you on the edge of your seat, and you probably won’t want to put your controller down.

  • No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky is another awesome indie game. This futuristic action-adventure creation will appeal to you if you enjoy the thought of entering an infinite universe where new challenges always emerge.

  • What Remains of Edith Finch

What Remains of Edith Finch is an interesting (and slightly spooky) indie game that’s a collection of tales instead of just one singular story. As the last surviving member of your family, you’ll need to explore Finch house — but only if you’re brave enough!

Final Thoughts

When people think about PlayStation games, there are certain ones that spring to mind first – FIFA, Madden NFL, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and more. However, indie games need to be on the must-play list of every PlayStation owner. Only by exploring these games can you discover something truly amazing to keep you occupied for hours.
