The Vanishing of Ethan Carter finally arrived for the PS4. The game originally came out on PC but it made the jump to home consoles. The game is a first-person, point-and-click adventure title that focuses on exploration and atmosphere. For players who need a bit of help and guidance with getting through the game, there are some helpful walkthroughs available that give some hints and tips to guide gamers through the short but story-heavy title.
The game’s puzzles rely on piecing together information and using the main character’s visionary abilities to reconstruct scenes or find clues. You can see a complete walkthrough below with no commentary from YouTuber GameSmoother. He plays through pretty quickly, completing the game is just an hour and a half. You can check it out below.
There are some very basic hints available throughout the video, such as the location of the crank, which is down by the river. You place the crank on the railcar, flip the lever and ride it down the track to the point where the gas canister is located. Once you put the rock in the pile it’s possible to recreate the scene.
You’ll need to number each of the scenes, starting with the rock in the debris. Second is the little boy Ethan tied to the tracks. The railcar sequence is third. The man’s severed legs is fourth. The old man telling Ethan to run is fifth and Travis being bludgeoned to death down the trail is sixth.
You can see an alternate way to play through the segments with a YouTube playlist from The Apex Hound. Check it out below.
The house room swapping puzzle can definitely get tricky. It’s a puzzle that’s difficult to describe but if you play the game and need help aligning the rooms you’ll find that puzzle around 22 minutes into the game.
When you get to the segment in the graveyard, you’ll need the crow to place on the broken switch inside the mausoleum. Pull the lever to ignite the fire and grab the knife from out of the body, this will trigger another sequence that must be numbered. The video, at around the 35 minute mark will show you which events to tag and in what order.
The segment in the mines with the chronology can be a bit tricky, but at the 48 minute mark in the first video walkthrough there’s a quick rundown of the order, which starts with Dale and Ethan’s mother walking into the mines.
Near the end of the game there’s a puzzle centered around aligning the glyphs to open the passageway. Since the puzzle relies on the imagery of the glyphs, it’s difficult to type how to align them. However, the video shows you how to put the right images into place and you can see how the puzzle should look to progress by lining up the glyphs as they appear in the image below.
There’s another tricky puzzle when it comes to opening the door after you leave the house where the segment plays out involving Dale and Travis. The door requires various symbols aligned in a specific order to open. You can see which order they need to be in with the image below.
Completing the puzzle opens the secret passageway into the ground.
The game can be tricky if you don’t know what to look for, but it’s not very long.
